Crafting an engaging experience - The Road ahead

Order of Rodentia - The Rodent in Rodentia

I thought it might be a good idea to show a bit of my plans moving forward with the game. Tell you how I'm doing, and perhaps some insight into how it came to be.

I'm a 27 year old hobbyist game-developer/artist from Denmark. I made a game in like 2019 or 2020 that kind of never fully got realised, and I've been thinking of tons of ways to make the idea possible without much luck.
The games scope got out of hand and I had hours upon hours of detailed animations that I put a lot of effort into.
Since then my time has been on other projects, and then suddenly it dawned on me to revive the game. This time however instead of doing too many ideas. I stripped everything back. Originally it was a platformer/semi-rougue-lite.
It just became way too hard to reinvent the wheel on that one, and I had ideas around how to go about it, but the work required became an overwhelming task to even start.

With, those things in mind I set out to create an idle game that had clear goals and a fresh feel, while keeping the core mechanics retro.
The features I wanted:

  • Easy to play
  • Single button controls
  • Progressive introduction to new mechanics
  • Visually engaging
  • Retro Feel
  • Crew and Characters that find Loot and Resources

What are you working on at the moment?

Right now I'm looking at ways to implement the next major mechanic. Recruitable soldiers that you send on missions, level up, and find resources and loot. The video below shows a brief clip of the animations together, so you can better get a sense of what it could possibly look like.

I hope I can at least give the option to purchase and change equipment on the next patch. A LOT of testing is probably required for this mechanic, I still haven't planned the entire mission/reward details and what type of loadout options to let players use. I am also looking at implementing a Settings menu for sound and other optional video/gameplay settings.

Let me know in the comments if you would like more of these types of updates or if you are just interested in standard patch updates.
